Watches & Warnings

Special Statement
Issued: 4:09 PM AKDT Aug. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Heavy rain expected Sunday night through Tuesday afternoon...

A weather front in the Gulf of Alaska will move slowly over the
Panhandle tonight through Tuesday afternoon. Forecasted storm
total rain amounts for this event will range from 4 to 7 inches at
sea level locations and as much as 10 inches at higher
elevations of the coastal mountains. Rain will be continuous
through Tuesday but there will be two surges of heavier rain
rates. The first one will be tonight and early Monday. The second
surge will be Monday night.

At this time rivers are expected to rise significantly and run
fast but stay within their banks. Ponding of water may occur on
roads and flat areas. Boats should be checked to make sure pumps
are working correctly and that vessels are not collecting water.
This additional rain on already saturated soils raises the
potential for mud slides.
