Forecasts for California  |   Return to US Severe Weather
Special Weather Statement
Expires 8:00 AM EDT on July 09, 2008

Statement as of 6:23 PM PDT on July 8, 2008

... Very hot conditions expected across interior sections of
southwestern California for the remainder of the week...

Strong high pressure over the state will continue to produce very
hot conditions over the interior portion of southwest California.
Records were tied or broken in the interior valleys... the
mountains... and the Antelope Valley... and maximum temperatures
are expected to be record levels.

In the mountains... and across interior valleys of San Luis
Obispo and Santa Barbara counties... temperatures are expected to
approach or exceed 105 degrees again on Wednesday... while high
temperatures in the Antelope Valley will be around 110
degrees. Heat index values will likely exceed 100 degrees again
on Wednesday across the interior valleys... mountains... and desert.
An excessive heat warning is in effect for the mountains again on
Wednesday.

The marine layer remains deep enough to allow low clouds and fog
to return to the valleys of Los Angeles and Ventura
counties later tonight... which will likely keep high temperatures
in the 90s to around 100 on Wednesday. Across the coastal
plain... high temperatures will range from the upper 60s at the
beaches to the 80s inland... except into the lower to mid 90s in
the foothills.

Strong high pressure will remain over the state throughout the
week. This will allow very hot conditions possibly persist
through at least Thursday. Some warming may occur across the
valleys of Ventura and Los Angeles counties Thursday as the
marine influence could decrease... with temperatures in the
hottest locations rising above 100 degrees.

A gradual cooling trend is expected over the region during the
weekend and the beginning of next week.

People should never leave children or animals in parked vehicles
even with the windows cracked... death will likely result. Continue
to drink plenty of fluids... stay out of the sunshine... and check
relatives and neighbors.
