Beach Hazard Statement, Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 3:33 PM GMT Jan. 18, 2019 – National Weather Service

... High surf advisory is cancelled...
... Beach hazards statement in effect through Monday afternoon...
... High risk of rip currents through Monday afternoon...

The National Weather Service in tiyan has cancelled the high surf
advisory.

* Along north facing reefs... surf has fallen below hazardous levels
of 9 feet. Surf of 6 to 8 feet will persist the next couple of
days. However... increasing north to northeast swell could cause
surf to reach hazardous levels again on Sunday.

* Along east facing reefs... surf has fallen below hazardous levels of
12 feet. Surf of 9 to 11 feet will persist the next several days.

* Rip currents... surf will maintain a high risk of rip currents along
east facing reefs through Monday afternoon.

* Hazards... portuguese man-o-War continue to wash up on local
beaches and are likely to keep washing up over the next few
days.

* Location... man-o-War have been reported on the north coast of
Guam at Tarague Beach and on the East Coast at ipan. Man-o-War
have recently been reported again along western beaches near
Piti.

* Potential impacts... man-o-War can inflict a painful sting...
even after they have died. Remain watchful and avoid touching
them. Closed-toe shoes are recommended as long as these
jellyfish-like animals are washing ashore.

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as rip currents
and other hazards create life-threatening conditions in the surf
zone. Use caution when in or near the water and remain watchful for
portuguese man-o-War and avoid touching them.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from
shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the reef.
Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol flags and signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain calm...
do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for help. If
you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to shore and
back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly
against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

Avoid venturing out along reefs and beaches... especially those facing
north and east. Large breaking waves can knock you down and cause
serious injuries. Rip currents will be life threatening.
