In 1884, the enormous Enigma tornado outbreak struck the
southeastern United States from Mississippi to the
Carolinas. The outbreak lasted around 15 hours and may
have involved 60 tornadoes of which 47 were confirmed.
Of the 6 states affected Georgia was hit the hardest with
17 tornadoes. The most violent was a massive vortex with
a track 40 miles long and nearly 1 mile wide that roared
across part of north central Georgia. Twenty two people
were killed, around 100 were injured, and many homes were
leveled or swept away.It is believed 178 were killed in
the outbreak. The outbreak is named "enigma" since the
exact number of tornadoes and fatalities will never be
known.
