Coastal Flood Warning, Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 4:02 AM EDT Sep. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Coastal Flood Warning in effect until 1 PM EDT this afternoon...
... Beach hazards statement remains in effect through this evening...

The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a coastal Flood Warning...
which is in effect until 1 PM EDT this afternoon. The coastal flood advisory is
no longer in effect.

* Location... Maryland Eastern Shore locations adjacent to the Atlantic
Ocean... ocean side and Bayside locations of Accomack and Northampton
Virginia... including tidal tributaries.

* Timing... expect flooding within about 2 hours either side of the high tide
cycle today. The most likely time for strong rip currents is a couple hours on
either side of low tide.

* Coastal flood impacts... widespread flooding of vulnerable areas will result
in an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses near the
Waterfront and shoreline. Water will be 2 to 3 feet deep in some areas
resulting in a sufficient depth to close numerous roads and threaten homes and
businesses. Flooding will extend inland from the Waterfront along tidal
rivers and bays resulting in some Road closures and flooding of vehicles.

* Shoreline impacts... large waves will cause severe beach and coastal damage.
Waves will severely damage dune structures. Waves will overtop and compromise
dunes in some areas. This will result in damage to property along the
shoreline including some property located immediately behind dune structures.
Actions should be taken to protect life and property.

* Surf or rip current risk... large breaking waves of 4 to 6 ft will result in
dangerous surf conditions and a high risk of rip currents. Do not enter or
approach the water due to the risk of being swept away.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A coastal Flood Warning means that flooding is occurring or imminent. Coastal
residents in the warned area should be alert for rising water... and take
appropriate action to protect life and property. Be prepared for the
possibility of Road closures and flooding of properties. If travel is
necessary... do not attempt to drive through water of unknown depth.

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as rip currents...
longshore currents... sneaker waves and other hazards create life-threatening
conditions in the surf zone. Caution should be used when in or near the water.
