Watches & Warnings

Special Statement
Issued: 5:26 AM EST Jan. 20, 2018 – National Weather Service

... Patchy black ice may continue into mid-morning in some
locations...

Warmer temperatures prompted plenty of snow melt during the day
Friday. Temperatures early this morning varied widely as a result
of remnant snow cover and ice. Martinsville, with snow cover on
the ground, was at 18 degrees at 5 am, while Roanoke, where no
snow remained was at 36 degrees. Remaining water and slush from
yesterday's melting along with remnant patches of snow in areas
shaded and north facing areas are likely still snow and ice
covered this morning. Black ice is near impossible to see on
pavement and very treacherous.

Travelers are urged to continue to through 10 am this morning
until temperatures rise above freezing in all areas and allow the
remaining snow and ice to begin to melt.
