The National Weather Service in Morristown, TN has issued a
* flood advisory for
the Powell River near Jonesville VA
* at 08pm Wednesday the stage was 12.6 feet.
* Flood stage is 18.0 feet.
* The river will continue to rise to near 16.5 feet by Thursday
morning, then is forecast to begin falling.
* At 18.0 feet... the river invades several fields and reaches a few
farm buildings.

* flood advisory for...
Lee County in southwestern Virginia...
Wise County in southwestern Virginia...

* until 130 am EST Thursday.

* At 729 PM EST, while Doppler radar indicated much of the heavier
rain had exited the area, local law enforcement reported ongoing
flooding with water on several roads.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Norton, wise, Jonesville, Big Stone Gap, Pennington Gap, Coeburn,
Appalachia, pound, St. Paul, St. Charles, Dryden, Rose Hill,
Pardee, Jasper, Ewing, Pattonsville and Cumberland Gap.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

... Flood Watch remains in effect through Thursday morning...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of east Tennessee and southwest Virginia, including
the following areas, in east Tennessee, Anderson, Bledsoe,
Bradley, Campbell, Claiborne, east Polk, Grainger, Hamilton,
Hancock, Knox, Loudon, Marion, McMinn, Meigs, Morgan, NW
Blount, northwest Monroe, Rhea, Roane, Scott TN, Sequatchie,
southeast Monroe, Union, and west Polk. In southwest Virginia,
Lee and wise.

* Through Thursday morning

* another round of rainfall is expected later today in addition
to rainfall that fell yesterday. Additional rainfall amounts
of 1 to 2 inches are expected on top of what has already
fallen, which may cause flooding due to the saturated ground
and elevated river levels.

* Low lying and poor drainage areas will have the greatest risk
for flooding. Creeks, streams, and main Stem rivers may also
flood.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means that conditions are favorable for heavy
rain... which may lead to flooding in and near the watch area. Be
alert for rising water or water over roadways. Keep informed...
and be ready for action if flooding is observed or if a Flood
Warning is issued. If you come to a closed or flooded Road... turn
around! Don't drown!
