Beach Hazard Statement, Coastal Flood Advisory
Issued: 7:10 PM EDT Sep. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement now in effect through Thursday evening...
... Coastal flood advisory remains in effect until 2 am EDT Thursday...

* location... Maryland Eastern Shore locations adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean...
ocean side and Bayside locations of Accomack and Northampton Virginia...
including tidal tributaries.

* Timing... expect minor flooding within a few hours either side of the high
tide cycle tonight into early Thursday morning. The most likely time for
strong rip currents is a couple hours on either side of low tide.

* Coastal flood impacts... shallow flooding is expected in the most vulnerable
locations near the Waterfront and shoreline resulting in a low threat of
property damage. Expect around one foot of inundation in low lying,
vulnerable areas. Some roads and low lying property including parking lots,
Parks and lawns near the Waterfront will experience shallow flooding.

* Shoreline impacts... breaking waves will result in beach erosion with only
minor additional damage possible to dune structures.

* Surf or rip current risk... large breaking waves of 4 to 6 ft will result in
dangerous surf conditions and a high risk of rip currents. Do not enter or
approach the water due to the risk of being swept away.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A coastal flood advisory means that onshore winds... wave action and/or tides
will combine to create flooding of low areas along the shore... and near tidal
rivers and creeks. Be prepared for the possibility of Road closures and minor
flooding of properties. If travel is necessary... do not attempt to drive
through water of unknown depth.

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as rip currents...
longshore currents... sneaker waves and other hazards create life-threatening
conditions in the surf zone. Caution should be used when in or near the water.
